Memorandum of Understanding between University of Wales, Newport and Kutaisi State University April 2008
This Memorandum of Understanding signifies a statement of intent to collaborate, but is not a legally binding document.
It recognises the intention of Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) and the University of Wales, Newport to establish a relationship to co-operate in a broad range of areas and to work together for their mutual benefit. The parties may seek to encourage and develop collaborative activities in various ways, including scholarship arrangements, as outlined in the attached Financial Annexe, the exchange of scholarly ideas/expertise, the support of specific discipline interaction, the development of programmes and the advanced entry to the University of Wales, Newport programmes of appropriately qualified students from ATSU.
Separate agreements for any collaborations agreed, including for advanced entry to Newport programmes, are required. The parties understand that in addition to the Financial Annexe outlined below any financial considerations associated with any forms of collaboration will be dealt with separately via a legal contract.
Newport recognises the value of this Memorandum of Understanding to ATSU in promoting its programmes and activities, but any promotional material/activity which includes reference to the University of Wales, Newport must be sent to and be approved by the Dean of International Affairs at Newport before use.
This Understanding is for 3 years in the first instance, and will be reviewed thereafter. Each party has the right to discontinue the arrangements subject to a period of 12 months’ notice being given. The Understanding may also be terminated at any time by mutual consent of all the parties.
In any cases of discontinuance, the parties will honour agreed commitments either via the accepted arrangements or suitable alternatives negotiated at that point.
Financial Annexe
Between the International Office of University of Wales, Newport and the Akaki
Tsereteli State University, Kutaisi
It is agreed that:
1. With effect from January 2008, the University of Wales, Newport will each year
offer one full-fee postgraduate scholarship to an appropriately qualified student
from ATSU. Please note that any scholarship not taken up may not be carried
forward to the following year, unless formal approval is received from Newport.
2. The scholarship will cover the full overseas fee, please note that travel and any other costs will not be covered by the scholarship. The scholarship holder, who
must be a registered student of ATSU, will be eligible to apply for any full time
taught masters programme at Newport. Their application will be subject to their
meeting normal academic, and in some cases professional, entry requirements
and to there being places available.
3. An application for the scholarship shall be submitted to the International Office at Newport before 1 June by eligible candidates on Newport’s standard taught postgraduate application form, supported by an official letter of nomination signed
by the Head of Foreign Affairs and Strategic Development Office ATSU.
Scholarships shall be awarded by Newport at its sole discretion. Newport will
provide scholarship-holders with a letter giving details of their scholarship, to be
used in the visa application process.
This financial annexe shall be reviewed in December of each year and may be terminated by either party by giving one year’s notice in writing.
