There has been wine in Georgia almost as long as there have been Georgians. Some Archaeologists claim that evidence of wine making dates back 5,000 years making Georgia the birthplace of wine. The Georgian word for wine is "Ghvino". Georgia cannot be imagined without wine. There are about 500 varieties of endemic grape.

Wine is an inseparable part of the traditional Georgian feast. At Georgian table toasts are made by a toast-master or “tamada” and wine is drunk from a clay cup or a horn called a “kantsi”. Folk songs are also frequently sung at table.

The locals also have a poteen style liquor called Chacha (pron. Charchar) This is a clear distillation of grapes similar to Grappa. Nearly everyone makes their own Chacha which is consumed in great quantities.
