There
has been wine in Georgia almost as long as there have been Georgians.
Some Archaeologists claim that evidence of wine making dates back 5,000
years making Georgia the birthplace of wine. The Georgian word for
wine is "Ghvino". Georgia cannot be imagined without wine. There are
about 500 varieties of endemic
grape. For more information about wine go to BBC online and Wine Pages The locals also have a poteen style liquor called Chacha (pron. Charchar) This is a clear distillation of grapes similar to Grappa. Nearly everyone makes their own Chacha which is consumed in great quantities.
